WarPuppy has added two new board games from the Rio Grande line to our shelves: Puerto Rico and Tikal.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is one of my favourite games. I was first introduced to this game a number of years back by a mate of my, Diego, who has a mad passion for boardgames. Puerto Rico isn't one of Grande's top 10 titles without reason. The game is about city building and like other popular board games such as Settlers of Catan, it is very easy to learn and yet has a multi layered strategy to it. You take on a role of Prospector, Captain, Mayor, Trader, Settler, Craftsman or Builder, and go about attempting to build various developments which earn you victory points. The player with the most victory points at the end of the game is the winner.
I enjoy this game because it has a cross gender and broad age appeal, a quality I like as it makes it a family favourite and ensures that you will get many opportunities to play it. The game will take you about 1 to 1.5 hours to play and is recommended for 3 - 5 players aged 13+. This game is great fun, as I am sure many of you will already know.
Tikal
Tikal is a board game that I haven't played. This is in fact one of the reasons we've got it into stock. It has been around for a while now, and a winner of the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (German Board Game of the Year award) in 1999. I shamelessly admit that this award has driven many of my choices in boardgames even back to when I was kid with the old classic game Scotland Yard.
The idea of this game is that you are a director of an expedition exploring Tikal looking for 1000 year old treasures. Players score points for the treasures recovered and the temples controlled. The expedition with the most points wins.
With alot of the same sort of appeal at Puerto Rico, it makes another excellent addition to WarPuppy's range of family board games. I can't wait to have crack at this myself. A game will take you about 1 to 1.5 hours to play and is recommended fo 2 - 4 players of ages 10+.
Cheers,
Mick
